What a joint injury feels like

When someone sprains a joint, this is what they feel:

If the injury happens suddenly when you are using the muscle, you may feel a “pop,” a shifting of the joint, or both.

The pain is instant.

Depending upon what part of the joint is injured, the location of the pain is either localized or deep inside the joint where you “just can’t put your finger right on it.”

The joint range of motion is instantly reduced.

The active movement of the joint “just feels different,” like something has changed inside the joint.

The type of pain can vary greatly because of the many different types of joint tissues involved. The types of pain include catching, stabbing, aching, sharp, or shifting.

If the joint is in the lower extremity, the pain increases with weight bearing while the joint may instantly feel unstable. Typically, the faster you walk or run, the worse the symptoms become.

Depending upon the severity of the injury and the type of tissue (bone, articular cartilage, capsule, fibrocartilage, fascia, or ligament), the swelling can be mild or severe.

The location of most of the swelling is inside the joint capsule.
